The Shadow was the first of the "mysterious avenger" pulp magazines to arrive and became immediately popular. By 1933 imitators arrived all fighting larger-than-life villains. The first to arrive was The Phantom Detective.

The novel, The Case of the Murdered Witness, is shown as  written by Robert Wallace, which is a pseudonym for the stable of "hack" writers employed by Standard Magazines.
