On the Road to RC1

To get from Camp Ross to RC1 I had to go through several villages, most with only a few store fronts and several flimsy shanties. This picture is of Yon Ju Gul, just outside the gates of RC1. At that time (1967) Yon Ju Gul was the last large village before reaching the DMZ, and because it was flanked by 3 Army bases, was also the last large enclave of prostitutes (see following picture). Legend was that Yon Ju Gul was one of the Orient's original cities of sin--and it did try to live up to it. The village was almost all bars, brothels, and black marketeers.

Most of the brothels (oh, 80 to 100 or so) were located on one large block of buildings, similar to the one above. This area was known as the "turkey farm." Whenever jeeps, buses, or truckloads of soldiers drove by, the ladies would wave and yell out "yobo seo," which loosely translated meant "hey you." These girls, as well as any soldiers' steady girlfriends, were known as yobos.
