Concertone (Lyon & Healy?)

Fleatar.jpg (31754 bytes) The question mark in the title means I think this is an old Lyon & Healy manufactured guitar, similar to their Washburn-brand instruments of the '20's and '30's. I believe Concertone was distributed through either Sears or Montgomery Wards catalogs. (I haven't researched this fully yet. If anyone knows, please e-mail me at coog@slip.net and enlighten me.)

Set the "way-back machine (Sherman)" to around 1974. Location: Alameda Flea Market, Alameda, California. I was always on the lookout for guitar bargains, and I found one there for 75 cents. It looked like it had been used to hit someone over the head since the back was completely smashed out and the top had wide cracks running through it. However, the neck, head, fingerboard, and gears were all intact, and the sides were still in good shape. I felt sorry for the instrument and figured I could repair it. Of course it sat around in closets in three different homes before I finally felt confident enough to repair it. I did, and it turned out fine.

The sides, neck, head, and new back are mahogany, the top spruce (with horizontal bracing), and the fingerboard is ebony. I carved a new ebony bridge (Martin-style), and matched and replaced 1/3 of the purfling. As with most guitars of this style, the tone is loud and in the treble range (not much bottom).
