savage.jpg (153689 bytes)Savage Tales, Vol. 1, No. 1, May., 1971. "Rated M for the mature reader!" Black and white stories in the Warren tradition, with some of the past Warren illustrators, including Gray Morrow, Gene Colan, and John Buscema. The cover, by John Buscema, is a poor Frazetta imitation.
conan.jpg (156834 bytes)Savage Tales, featuring Conan, The Barbarian, Vol. 1, No. 2, Oct., 1973. The second Savage Tales came out nearly 2 1/2 years after the first, then ran fairly regularly for ten more issues. Artists in this issue included Barry Smith, George Barr, Frank Brunner, Joe Maneely, Gray Morrow, Al Williamson, and Berni Wrightson.
Kull.jpg (151034 bytes)Kull and the Barbarians, Vol. 1, No. 1, May, 1975. Stan Lee began another Robert E. Howard barbarian saga with this issue. Lee brought in another great group of artists, including Neal Adams, Ross Andru, Wally Wood, Marie and John Severin, Gil Kane, Ernie Chua, and Roy G. Krenkel.
unknown.jpg (155874 bytes)Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction, Vol. 1, No. 1, Jan., 1975. Another Stan Lee production with more great artists, including a cover by Kelly Freas (known for his Mad Alfred E. Newman covers), plus Gene Colan, Neal Adams, Frank Brunner, Wally Wood, Al Williamson, and Mike Kaluta.
webhoror.jpg (133085 bytes)Web of Horror, No. 3, Apr., 1970. A publisher other than Warren and Stan Lee (Marvel), Major Magazines, Inc., tried to enter into the Creepy/Eerie domain with this title, which lasted only 3 issues. However, it was good exposure for a few younger artists, including Berni Wrightson, Bruce Jones, and Mike Kaluta. Jones copied Wally Wood quite well, and another artist, Ralph Reese, copied Frank Frazetta. Berni Wrightson unique style was developing well with his work on this issue.
macabre.jpg (151997 bytes)Weird Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 1, No. 1, Jan., 1975. In 1975, Seaboard Periodicals released a barage of comic and magazine titles. Their Atlas comics came out with 21 titles, all lasting a whopping 3 or 4 issues. Weird Tales of the Macabre, like the comics, lasted only 2 issues. Most notable about the first issue is the cover by Jeff Jones. Other artists included Pat Boyette, Ernie Colon, Leo Duranona, Leo Summers, Ramon Torrents, and Villanova.
