The Comic Magazines & Comic Novels

During the 1960s Warren began publishing black and white graphic comics using many artists trained at the E.C. "school of art and storytelling." Stories and art were much more graphic and mentally challenging, and Warren began to take some market share away from the Comics Code-strangled color comics industry. So much so that Marvel tried to enter the realm with more graphic Conan titles, and other publishers entered with Creepy/Eerie knockoffs.

creeptoc.jpg (144978 bytes)Table of Contents for Creepy No. 1. Many familiar names here, most from the E.C. camp, including Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Frank Frazetta, Gray Morrow, Joe Orlando, and Al Williamson.
Creepy2.jpg (135916 bytes)Creepy, No. 2, 1965. Cover by Frank Frazetta. Frazetta illustrated a story in No. 1, but preferred doing covers. He went on to do dozens of covers for Warren in the next few years. Stories and art by Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, George Evans, Gray Morrow, Joe Orlando, Angelo Torres, Al Williamson, and Bob Lubbers.
eerie2.jpg (124951 bytes)Eerie, No. 2, 1966. This "Collector's Edition" is listed as No. 2 because Warren published Eerie No. 1 the year before as a one-shot comic book size publication (approx. 5 1/4" x 7 1/4"). Eerie No. 1 was nothing more than reprints from Creepy issues 7 and 8.
With Eerie No. 2, the format became similar to Creepy but with the intention to be a little more graphic. The "staff" included Eugene Colan, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Frank Frazetta, Gray Morrow, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Jay Taycee, Angelo Torres, and Alex Toth.
spirit1.jpg (151727 bytes)Spirit, No. 1, Apr., 1974. Warren hired Will Eisner as Editor-in-Chief for this series of Spirit reprints, with the occasional new story. Warren published 16 issues, then Krupp Comic Works printed up to issue #41.
